Ganga Satyagraha – Save Ganga Movement

Ganga Satyagraha

Dear all,

We aim to inspire like-minded Water Satyagrahis among the youth throughout the country to work for the rejuvenation and preservation of our great river mothers and their sources — our great sacred mountains and forests, which is essential to secure lasting food, water, air, and health security for our present and future generations, as well as for all life forms. In particular, we seek to create like-minded Water Satyagrahi groups throughout the country:

  • To put moral pressure on industrialists by creating awareness among people in their regions, encouraging them to boycott the products of industries that discharge their effluents — treated or untreated — into our river mothers, lakes, and other valuable water bodies.
  • To put moral pressure on the government to accept and implement, at the earliest, at least the following recommendations of our Save Ganga Movement:

A) Declaration of Mother Ganga as National River

  • Zero discharge of treated or untreated sewage water, industrial effluents, etc. into the river
  • Adequate natural environmental flow with sediments in the river
  • Protection of the river's floodplain

B) Enact a Law Protecting River Rights

  • Policy of Zero Discharge into rivers
  • Policy of Maintenance of Adequate Environmental Flow
  • Policy of Protection of Active Floodplains

C) Protect Eco-Fragile Uttarakhand Region

  • Declare Uttarakhand Ganga Basin as "Ecologically Fragile Sanctuary for Himalayan Flora and Fauna"
  • Declare it as a "National Spiritual Heritage Zone"
  • No eco-hostile tourism in the name of Tirtha Yatra
Why It Matters:

Rejuvenation and preservation of our National River mother Ganga — lifeline of nearly 40% of India’s population — will be a major step in the right direction for the rejuvenation and preservation of all our other great river mothers and their sources. A clean Ganga is a symbol of a clean, thriving environment nationwide.
